Ratan Tata unveils what is perhaps
the most-hyped four-wheeler of the year at the Auto Expo show in New
Delhi. Nano is priced at Rs 1 lakh, excluding taxes.
Tata Motors on Thursday unveiled its
'People's Car', the 4-door Nano, which will be the world's cheapest
car with a dealer price of 100,000 rupees.
Following are some details on the car, which was presented at the Auto
Expo in New Delhi.
The car has a 624cc engine and is
priced at about half that of the current cheapest car in the market,
the Maruti 800. The new car will do 20 km per litre, it will have
lower pollution levels than a two-wheeler and will meet all foreign
environmental criteria.

* Length: 3.1 metres
* Height: 1.6 metres
* Width: 1.5 metres
* Engine : Rear-wheel drive, 2-cylinder, 623 cc, multi-point
fuel-injection petrol engine. Engine is rear mounted. Tata said it was
the first time a 2-cylinder gasoline engine was being used in a car
with single balancer shaft.
The cheapest car
* Safety : Tata said the Nano has an all sheet-metal body, with safety features
such as crumple zones, intrusion-resistant doors, seat-belts, strong
seats and anchorages, and the rear tailgate glass bonded to the body.
Tyres are tubeless.
* Environment : Tata said tailpipe emission performance exceeded
current regulatory requirements, and the Nano had a lower overall
pollution level than two-wheelers made in India. It said high fuel

Tata Nano to dampen demand
for bikes, second-hand cars :
NEW DELHI (Reuters) - Two wheeler
prices are likely to slide and banks' car loan portfolios are set
to rise from October when millions of consumers start buying the
world's cheapest car made by Tata Motors, a survey said on Friday.
The survey on 250 chief executives
by the Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India also
said second-hand car sales would fall by a minimum of 35 percent.
Tata group chairman Ratan Tata on
Thursday launched "Nano" costing only 100,000 rupees -- less than
half the price of Maruti Suzuki's cheapest variant M-800 but
slightly costlier than the latest Royal Enfield bike of Escorts.
Assocham said a vast majority of
CEOs believe that Tata Motors has given a stiff challenge to
two-wheeler manufacturers, who may be forced to cut prices by 20
percent to maintain their market size.
Banks' loan exposure to the
four-wheeler industry would go up by 25 percent from October 2008
after Nano cars roll down on roads, it said.
A good percentage of respondents,
however, said congestion on roads would multiply which will put
pressure on governments to improve the existing road networks.
About 200 CEOs said states should
exempt the 12.5 percent value added tax on the small car in public
interest.
