Assam is good example of unity in diversity, where people of different religion and culture live together with harmony. The Assamese community owe their origin to the unique fusion and fraternisation of various ethnic groups such as, the Austro-Asiatics, Negroids, Dravidian, Tibeto-Barmans, Mongoloids and Aryans. The inhabitants of Assam can be broadly devided into three categories namely - the Tribals, the Non-tribals and the Schedule Caste. The tribal population of the state mainly live in hills and consists of people of various ethnic groups such as the Bodo-Kacharis, the Deoris, the Miris, the Rabhas etc. The Non-Tribals generally live in the plains which include the Ahoms, the Morans, the Muttaks, the Kalitas, the Chutias etc. The Schedule Caste however, include the Basfors and the Baniyas, the Kaibartas, the Hiras, the Namasudras, etc.

Assam is the habitat of about 2.59% of India’s population. According to the 2001 census, the total population of Assam counted for about 2,66,38,407 persons of which 1,37,87,799 were males and 1,28,50,608 were females. The density of population in Assam was 340 persons per sq. km. during that census. The literacy rate was 64.28% with 71.93% among males and 56.03% among females. Hindus are majority in Assam with 64.89% of total population.

Birendra Kumar Bhattacharya

Born in the year, 1924, he was the first Assamese to be honoured with the prestigious ‘Jnanpith Award’. He got this award for his novel ‘Mrityunjoy’. In the year 1983, he was honoured with the respectible post of the President of ‘Asom Sahitya Sabha’. He was also awarded with the coveted ‘Sahitya Academy Award’ for his novel ‘Yaruyingam’ in the year, 1961. The life of this eminent personality ended on 6th August, 1997.

Banikanta Kakati

Born in 1894, he was a famous literary personality and a great educationalist. He gave a new dimension to Assamese literature. He wrote a large number of articles both in English and Assamese. ‘Mother Goddess Kamakhya’, ‘Life and Teachings of sankaradev’, ‘purani Asomiya Sahitya’, ‘Sahitya aru Prem’ etc., are some of his great works. He passed away in the year, 1952.  

Pabhoi Wildlife Sanctuary

Pabhoi Wildlife Sanctuary is situated in the Lakhimpur district. It was declared as a wildlife sanctuary exclusively for the protection of “Wild Water Buffalo”. This sanctuary is also famous as a haven of Elephants. The total area of this sanctuary is 49.0 sq. km.

Bornadi Wildlife Sanctuary

Bornadi Wildlife Sanctuary is situated in the Darrang district of Assam. Proximity to the Himalayas gives it an extra advantage in terms of wildlife and natural beauty. It was declared as a sanctuary in the year 1980. This wildlife sanctuary protects some rare wildlife species namely - the Hispid Hare and Pigmy Hog. The total are of this sanctuary is 26.22 sq. km. The prime attractions are Pigmy Hog, Hispid Hare, Bears, Leopards, Elephants, Sambar and various species of birds.
