Kamakhya Temple : Situated atop
the Nilachal Hills, the foremost shrine of Assam, Kamakhya is
an ancient seat of Tantrik and Shakti cults of Hinduism. A
little distance from Kamakhya temple is Bubhaneshwari temple
from where one can have a panoramic view of the Brahmaputra
River and the city.
Sukreswar Temple :
Close by the North Brooke Gate,
built to welcome the then Viceroy of India, Lord North Brooke,
Sukreswar temple is famous for the Sixth Jyotirlinga of India.
Navagraha temple :
Situated atop Chitrachal hills this " Temple of Nine Planets"
was a great centre for the study of Astrology and Astronomy.
Umananda Temple : Umananda temple
is situated on the Peacock Island, in the middle of the
Brahamputra River, which is world's smallest river island
inhabited by humans.
Srimanta Sankaradeva Kalakshetra
: Situated at about 10 km from
the main city centre, Srimanta Sankardeva Kalakshetra is a modern
cultural complex at Panjabari. Regular cultural events, musical
recitals & dance performances are held every weekend. It is open
to visitors on all days except Mondays. Ph. 2337382.
Bashistha Ashram
: Set in idyllic surroundings
about 12 km away, this ashram was established by Rishi Bashistha
in the remote past. It is now a pilgrim centre as well as a picnic
spot for visitors.
Tirupathi Balaji Temple
This newly constructed temple with striking South Indian
Architecture is around 11km away from the city.
Madan Kamdev : Madan Kamdev is
situated 35 km from Guwahati.It is an archeological site where
erotic sculptures are found. Madan Kamdev is often referred as
Mini Khajuraho of Assam.
Chandubi Lake : A natural
lagoon and fine picnic spot which is 64 kms. from Guwahati. The
lake and its surrounding is an ideal holiday resort with the added
attraction of fishing and rowing. The place is easily accessable
from Guwahati.
Sualkuchi : Assam produces
three unique varieties of silks, the Golden Muga, the White Pat
and the warm Eri. Silks grown all over the state find their way to
Sualkuchi, 32 kms from Guwahati. Sualkuchi is one of the world's
largest weaving village often called the Manchester of the East.
The entire population here is engaged in weaving exquisite silk
fabrics. A renowned centre of silk production, particularly known
for Muga - the golden silk of Assam which are not produced
anywhere else in the world.
Majuli : Majuli is the world's
largest river island. Majuli situated in the midst of river
Brahmaputra, is the centre of Vaishnava culture.
There are over fifteen Vaishnava monasteries or satras on Majuli.
The major satras are Kamalabari, Natun Kamalabari, Auniati, Garmur,
Samoguri, Dakhinpat and Bengenaati. These satras are regarded as
the main centres for Assamese art, music, dance, drama,
handicrafts, literature and religion etc. Auniati is famous for
its considerable collection of Assamese old utensils, jewellery
and handicrafts. Upper Majuli is inhabited by tribes like the
Mising and the Deoris and is the centre of a living heritage of
colourful costumes and festivals. Plenty of migratory birds of
great varieties are also seen here.
Sibsagar : Sibsagar is 369 kms.
towards the east of Guwahati and is the headquarter of a district
of the same name. Sibsagar was the capital of the Ahoms who ruled
Assam at a stretch for six hundred years before the advent of the
British. It is a beautiful town located around the huge Sibsagar
tank, an artificial lake constructed by Queen Madambika in 1734
A.D. The Shiva dol or Shiva Temple on the bank of this tank is
believed to be the highest Shiva temple in India.
Kaziranga National Park : The
first and the oldest National Park in Assam situated in Golaghat
District, is a World Heritage site. Spread over an area of 430 sq.
kms., Kaziranga National Park is the natural home of the
one-horned Indian rhinoceros.
Declared a National Park in 1974 the landscape of Kaziranga is of
sheer forest, tall elephant grass, rugged reeds, marshes and
shallow pools.
The one horned Rhinoceros, Elephant, Indian bison, Swamp Deer,
Samber, Hog Deer, Sloth Bear, Tiger, Leopard cat, Jungle cat, Hog
badger, Capped langur, Hollock gibbon, Jackal, Goose, Hornbills,
Ibis, Cormorants, Egret, Heron fishing eagle etc. all form a part
of the very complex ecological balance of the park.
During Winter a large number of migratory birds are also seen
here.
The Park can be visited by Jeep, Car or on Elephant back.
Hajo : Located 32 kms. from
Guwahati on the north bank of the Brahmaputra, it is a place where
three religions meet - Hinduism, Islam and Buddhism. It has a
large number of temples, the chief among them being
Hayagriva-Madhab Temple. There is a belief that this temple
contains the relic of Lord Buddha, while a section of the Buddhist
hold that Lord Buddha attained nirvana here. Large number of
Bhutanese visit this temple every year during the winter season.
There is a place of pilgrimage for Muslims here known as Poa-Mecca.
Manas National Park : The only
Tiger Project in Assam, Manas is one of India's most magnificent
National Parks. It is situated on the bank of the river Manas at
the foothills of the Himalayas. It is a well known World heritage
site with it's unique combination of scenic beauty and rare wealth
of wildlife. Hundreds of the winged species migrate to the
friendly climate of Manas during Winter. Among them are Riverchats
(White Capped Redstars), Forktails, Cormorants and various types
of ducks including the Ruddy Shelduck. The woodland birds are no
less charming and include the Indian Hornbill and the Great Pied
Hornbill.
Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary :
Situated in the Morigaon district, Pobitora is one of the major
wildlife sanctuaries of Assam. It is about 60 km. away from
Guwahati City, situated on the border of Nagaon and Kamrup Dist.
Covering an area of 38.8 Sq. km., Pobitora is mainly famous for
its Great Indian One-horned Rhinoceros. Other animals such as the
Asiatic Buffalo, Leopard, Wild Bear, Civet Cat etc. are also found
here. More than 200
Orang (Rajiv Gandhi) National Park :
It is a miniature Kaziranga covering an area of 78.81 sq.
kms. 150 km away from Guwahati and is situated in the Darrang
District of Assam. Sixty percent of the sanctuary is grassland.
The animals seen in this sanctuary are the One-horned Rhinoceros,
Leopard, Elephant, Sambar, Barking Deer, Tiger, varieties of water
birds, Green Pigeon, Florican, Teal , Goose, etc.
Mayang : Mayang is located in Morigaon district ,
neibouring place of Guwahati. Mayang is very famous for Black
Majic and various Herbal Therapy.
Shillong : Shillong , the
capital of Meghalaya and also the district headquarter of East
Khasi Hills is situated at an altitude of 1496 meters above the
sea level. It is well contected with Guwahati just at a distance
of 103 kms. According to legends , the name “Shillong” is derived
from a deity named ‘SHYLLONG’ whose dwelling is also known as
‘Shyllong Peak”. Shillong is notably one of the finest hill
stations in India having temperate climate through out the year.

Golf Links : Shillong's Golf
Course is considered one of the best in India. It is situated in
the center of the city, close to the polo ground.
Lady Hydari Park : Lady Hydari
Park is named after the wife of Sir Akbar Hydari, the first Indian
Governor of Assam who assumed charge on the eve of independence.
Next to the park, is a mini zoo, an added attraction for children.
Shillong Peak : Shillong Peak,
at a height of 1,960 metres above sea level, is another attraction
of Shillong. On a clear day, you can see the Himalayan peaks and
plains of Sylhet from the summit.
Ward's Lake : This artificial
lake located in the heart of the city, Shillong is named after
William Ward, the then Chief Commissioner of Assam . Besides a
beautiful garden bloomed with various season flowers, boating and
cafeteria are also available for the tourists.
Waterfalls : In and around
Shillong, there are a number of beautiful waterfalls. Bishop
Falls, Elephant Falls, Spread Eagle Falls, Sweet Falls, Crinoline
Falls and Beadon Falls are best known.
Ram Krishna Mission : Ram
Krishna Mission situated in Laitumkharh is one of oldest
affiliated Mission of Belur Math.
Cherrapunjee : Cherrapunjee
has a rich historical heritage and was the first British outpost
in this part of the country. Sohra is the original Khasi name of
Cherrapunjee. It is 1300 metres above sea level and 56 kms from
Shillong. This place enjoys heavy rainfall through out the year. A
pleasant drive to see roaring waterfalls leaping into deep gorges
is worth seeing. The lovely town is also famous for its limestone
caves and orange honey. Close to the town are the glorious falls
named Nohsngithiang falls, Dainthlen falls , Nohkailikai falls
(World’s fourth highest) and many more.
Tawang : Tawang, perched at a
height of over 10,000 ft, is world-renowned for its 400-year-old
Buddhist Monastery, one of the biggest in India.
The Monastery was founded by the monk Mera Lama, a contemporary of
the fifth Dalai Lama. The sixth Dalai Lama was born here. The
Tawang Monastery has an interesting collection of Thangkas
(Tibetan painting on cloth) and a large gilded statue of Sakyamuni
(the historical Buddha) in the prayer hall. The Tawang Monastery,
also known as the `Galden Namgyal Lhatse`, is beautifully situated
on a spur about 2 km from the heart of the town. Before the
establishment of the Monastery, Tawang was a centre of Tantric
religion.
Srimanta Sankardeva Kalakshetra :
The Srimanta Sankardeva
kalakshetra has been set up as a grand exposition of the life and
culture of the people of Assam. Named after the greatest Vaishnava
saint and the greatest integrator of the Assamese society Srimanta
Sankardeva.
The Kalakshetra is a multi-Arts
complex.It houses a Central Museum where cultural objects and
day-to-day articles used by different ethnic groups are preserved
and exhibited, an Open Air Theatre with 2000 capacity to hold folk
festivals and to
present traditional dance and drama
of the State. an Artists' Village which offers the visitors and
the residents an atmosphere of the village of Assam, the Sahitya
Bhavan which is a library of rare books and manuscripts, the
Lalit-Kala Bhavan which has sufficient space for exhibition, art
and sculpture workshops, and a Heritage Park. The Kalakshetra has
been chosen as the venue for many cultural activities.
Planetarium :
Situated in
Guwahati is the only one of its kind in the entire North Eastern
region.The mysterious aspects of the universe are brought alive in
the dark domed structure inside the planetarium.
River Cruise :
The turbulent rivers, the mystic
blue hills, the savage terrains and serene countryside beckon are
the adventurers to Assam. Challenge the Brahmaputra, one of the
